The wider storm

An upper level trough and a strong lake breeze combined with an unstable air mass to trigger a line of thunderstorms from Southern Ontario to western Pennsylvania. These storms increased in coverage and intensity as they swept eastward across western and North Central New York late afternoon into the evening.
