Event narrative

Lightning started an estimated 20 to 30 wildfires in the Willamette National Forest in early August. The Cedar Creek Fire started on the morning of the 1st. The fire grew to around 7800 acres by the end of the month. Impacts included smoke settling in the Oregon 58 corridor affecting the towns of Oakridge and Westfir.

Wider weather episode

Strong upper level high pressure over the Great Basin with a trough off the northern California coast brought unstable southerly flow over the region. Several wildfire starts, including the Cedar Creek Fire, was attributed to thunderstorms that rolled across the area on the evening of the 1st.
