Flash Flood — Cochise, Arizona

Event narrative
Heavy rain of 2-2.5 in less than 90 minutes northeast of town caused flash flooding in St. David, mainly southwest of State Route 80, although the highway was closed due to flooding for a period of time. A total of 53 homes sustained at least some flood damage. A homeowner with a basement reported flood water hit a depth of 6 feet, destroying a new furnace and damaging electrical wiring. Floodwaters also affected septic tanks and wells.
Wider weather episode
Thunderstorms moved southwest across southeast Arizona during the afternoon and evening. In the Tucson Metro area, damaging winds downed dozens of power poles and heavy rain resulted in flash flooding. Flash flooding also occurred in the Cochise County community of St. David.
