Flash Flood — Kane, Utah

2022-09-21 · near Adairville, Kane, Utah

Event narrative

A strong thunderstorm moved through portions of the Paria River drainage basin, with widespread 1-hour Multi-Radar/Multi-Sensor rainfall estimates of 0.50 to 0.75 inches. This generated a flood wave that propagated downstream, with the Paria near Kanab river gauge rising from 100 CFS around 1:00 pm MST to 1180 CFS at 1:25 pm MST.

Wider weather episode

A deep upper level low coming ashore along the U.S. West Coast resulted in a combination of strong forcing, instability, and available moisture over the Salt Lake City forecast area. This event prompted an uncommon issuance of a Severe Thunderstorm Watch (number 541 of the year). Scattered strong wind gusts occurred, as did multiple instances of Flash Flooding.
