Heat in North Big Horn Basin, Wyoming

At the Greybull Airport (South Big Horn County Airport) there were 7 consecutive days of high temperatures over 90 degrees to start the month. On the 4th and 7th, the all time September high temperature of 103 degrees F was set then tied. The 103 F on September 7th is now the latest 100 F or greater temperature for the site.

A persistent and amplified ridge brought a prolonged period of unusually hot temperatures to western and central Wyoming for the beginning of September 2022. Most lower elevation sites saw high temperatures topping 90 F for several days, including a few locations reaching 100 F. All time September high temperatures were set at several sites including: Riverton, Lander, Casper, Worland, Buffalo, Greybull, Big Piney and Lake Yellowstone. Temperatures cooled on September 8th and 9th when a strong cold front moved southward across the state.
