Event narrative

Hurricane Ian's slow movement and large wind field led to a long period of tropical storm force winds and occasional hurricane force gusts in squalls offshore Brevard County. A Scripps buoy just east of Port Canaveral measured seas up to 12 feet, and NOAA buoy 41009 located 20 miles offshore Port Canaveral recorded seas of 15 to 20 feet.

After making landfall as a major hurricane in southwest Florida, Ian moved northeast across the peninsula and emerged into the Atlantic Ocean near Cape Canaveral as a tropical storm. Ian was then upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane as the center moved further offshore and was about 65 miles east of Daytona Beach. Ian's slow movement and large wind field led to a long period of tropical storm force winds and occasional hurricane force gusts in squalls, as well as high seas, over the east central Florida Atlantic waters.
