Event narrative
SNOW SQUALL. A broken line of snow squalls accompanied by gusty winds produced brief whiteout conditions as it crossed Sullivan County during that late afternoon of November 18, 2022. This led to a three-vehicle accident on US Route 220 that closed the road in both directions (for over 2 hours) between PA Route 87 and Shinerville Road in Cherry Township. There was one injury reported. The road closure was prolonged by a tractor tralier that ignored the detour and got stuck.
Wider weather episode
A reinforcing shot of unseasonably cold air led to a broken line of snow squalls that pushed from west to east across central Pennsylvania during the afternoon of November 18, 2022. These squalls reduced visibility to a quarter mile or less and were accompanied by gusty winds. Surface temperatures were just above freezing for many locations at the onset of the squalls, and flash-freezing was a concern.
