Coastal Flood — Southern Colleton, South Carolina

2022-09-09 · Southern Colleton, South Carolina

Event narrative

Dockside restaurant on Edisto Island reported that water began entering the building at 6:30 pm EST. The restaurant was closed due to the flooding.

Wider weather episode

The combination of the lunar perigee and full moon produced some of the highest astronomical tides of the year along the southeast South Carolina coast. Strong northeast flow caused large positive tidal departures which allowed peak tide levels to rise above major coastal flooding thresholds. Significant flooding was reported across portions of Charleston and coastal Colleton counties.
