Event narrative

Sustained tropical storm force winds as high as 63 knots were measured at Smith Shoal Light, with a peak gust of 78 knots.

Major Hurricane Ian moved north from far western Cuba into the western Straits of Florida. As Ian moved north over the Dry Tortugas and into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico from September 27th through the 28th, tropical storm force winds spread throughout the Florida Keys coastal waters with hurricane force wind gusts occurring mainly west and north of Key West. A total of 15 persons were declared lost at sea along with 5 confirmed fatalities.
