Event narrative

The northeast portion of the zone started September in Severe(D2) drought with no drought conditions over the southwest. By the end of the month, the northeast improved to Moderate(D1) drought and continued no drought conditions over the southwest.

Wider weather episode

Even though the last month of the monsoon season brought slightly below normal rainfall, late August precipitation helped to improve drought conditions across southern New Mexico in September.
