Tropical storm wind and sea conditions capsized a vessel carrying 27 souls south of the Lower Florida Keys on September 27th. The USCG reported 9 survivors, including 4 reaching shore and 5 rescued) and 5 confirmed deceased. The 13 remaining souls were presumed lost at sea.

Major Hurricane Ian moved north from far western Cuba into the western Straits of Florida. As Ian moved north over the Dry Tortugas and into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico from September 27th through the 28th, tropical storm force winds spread throughout the Florida Keys coastal waters with hurricane force wind gusts occurring mainly west and north of Key West. A total of 15 persons were declared lost at sea along with 5 confirmed fatalities.
