Event narrative

Heavy lake effect snow showers, temperatures falling into the teens, and gusty winds to 40 mph developed behind an arctic cold front late on November 19th into the early morning hours of November 20th. Near zero visibilities and intense 1 per hour snowfall rates were observed with more intense lake effect bands, especially during the overnight hours. Blowing snow and snow covered roads occurred as a result with difficult travel and accidents across the region. The heaviest snow accumulations occurred north of the US 20 corridor, with a report of 9.6 inches of total snow accumulation in South Bend. Lesser amounts and impacts were experienced across southern portions of the county.

Bands of heavy lake effect snow affected far northern Indiana late afternoon on November 19th through the early morning hours of November 20th. Intense snowfall rates with near zero visibility created difficult travel conditions. Snowfall accumulations up to near 10 inches were reported in the South Bend area.
