Event narrative

Significant precipitation deficits continued into October with severe to extreme drought persisting through the month. Howard County began October with a fairly small area in D2 and D3, but by October 11th, D2 had expanded to the entire county with D3 remaining on the southern edge of the county near the Missouri River.

Wider weather episode

Significant precipitation deficits from the summer/early fall months continued into October, with severe drought (D2) continuing and even expanding into extreme drought (D3) for much of the Interstate 70/Missouri River corridor in Missouri and Kansas per the UNL US Drought Monitor. These drought conditions yielded a fairly active fire weather season in October.
