A military meteorologist reported quarter sized hail at Interstate 25 mile marker 21. The interstate was covered with hail from marker 20 to 25.

Wider weather episode

A cutoff upper low was sitting over the northern Gulf of California with a 90 knot jet moving over southern New Mexico. These features combined with a cold front dropping out of the north to bring heavy rain and severe storms to the region.
