NWS forecaster in the Mendenhall Valley measured 5 inches at 830am Thursday, then had another 2 inches by 11 am. The end of day measurement at the NWS office had 8.5 inches of snow. Out the road measured additional snowfall that lasted longer, but had changed to rain across the rest of the borough.
Wider weather episode
Low and associated frontal band moved across the northern panhandle after a cold break, causing snow. A brief period of enhanced snow fall rates of 1 to 2 inches an hour early Thursday morning was followed by a mix with with rain through the afternoon for the Icy Strait area. The northern inner channels saw snow last longer.
