A long duration lake-effect snow event led to snowfall totals of 6 to 10 inches along the higher terrain up from Lake Superior. A persistent band of lake-effect snow led to a total of almost 31 inches near Hovland by the end of the event.
Wider weather episode
A slow moving area of low pressure moved into the region starting on the 14th. The track of the low led to a long period of easterly winds across western Lake Superior. These winds combined with the relatively warm waters of Lake Superior led to a long duration lake-effect snow event along the North Shore of northeastern Minnesota. Enhanced bands were embedded within the wider expanse and led to narrow areas of higher snowfall. The highest report was from the Hovland area where over 30 inches was received by the time winds shifted and the lake-effect ended.
