Event narrative

California Highway Patrol paced traffic long interstate 5 through Lebec and the Tajon Pass due to snowfall. Up to an inch of snow accumulated in the Grapevine area.

Wider weather episode

A cold upper low pressure system dropped southward over northern California on January 29 then dropped further southward off the central and southern California coast on January 30. This system provided for enough moisture and dynamics across the area for up to a tenth of an inch of liquid precipitation at several stations with upslope favored areas generally picking up between a tenth and a quarter inch of liquid precipitation. The precipitation initially fell as snow above 4000 feet during the morning of January 30. The snow level lowered to around 2000 feet by the early afternoon of January 30 when the precipitation moved south of the area.
