Event narrative

Several power outages were reported within rural Colfax County with 2 inches of icing also being reported.

Wider weather episode

A modified Arctic airmass pushed southward into eastern NM January 31, 2023 and into February 1, 2023. Freezing fog developed behind the cold front, focusing along the New Mexico and Colorado border from Raton to Clayton. While light icing was recorded by the Raton Municipal Airport ASOS, heavier ice accretions were reported by a weather observer over rural areas of Colfax and Union Counties on the morning of February 1, 2023. Power outages in this area resulted from the ice accretion.
