Event narrative

The Ship Shoal Oil Platform KSPR measured a thunderstorm wind gust of 70 mph or 61 knots.

Wider weather episode

A surface low developed in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico on December 19th and tracked eastward across the northern Gulf through the afternoon and evening hours. A warm front oriented west-to-east appendant to that low, was the focal point for thunderstorms in the local coastal waters. A couple storms along and south of the warm front in the warm sector, where warm and moist air was in place, reached severe limits and producing severe thunderstorm winds on an oil platform.
