What the National Weather Service wrote
The Ship Shoal Oil Platform KSPR measured a thunderstorm wind gust of 58 mph or 50 knots.
The wider storm
A surface low developed in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico on December 19th and tracked eastward across the northern Gulf through the afternoon and evening hours. A warm front oriented west-to-east appendant to that low, was the focal point for thunderstorms in the local coastal waters. A couple storms along and south of the warm front in the warm sector, where warm and moist air was in place, reached severe limits and producing severe thunderstorm winds on an oil platform.
Began near Ship Shoal Oil Platform (kspr) (28.6000, -91.2000).
