Heavy Snow — Northern New Haven, Connecticut

2023-02-27 to 2023-02-28 · Northern New Haven, Connecticut

Event narrative

Heavy snow fell across the northern half of the county into the morning commute. A public report from 4 ENE Naugatuck of 6.2 inches was reported. A trained spotter from North Haven reported 5.5 inches. Cocorahs observers reported 5.5 inches in Hamden and 5.5 inches in Meriden. The following snowfall reports came in just after sunrise as temperatures were marginal which likely led to some compaction just before the measurements were taken.

Wider weather episode

Weak high pressure and a marginally cold air mass was locked into the northeast with blocking to the north across Eastern Canada, while low pressure over the Midwest moved east and redeveloped off the Northern Mid Atlantic coast. This led to the first widespread accumulating snowfall across the CWA.
