A strong upper level low pressure lifted from the central Rockies and across the upper midwest. A broad shield of snow expanded across Iowa through the afternoon, resulting in heavy snowfall rates at times. Several multi-vehicle crashes occurred during the evening commute on the 18th causing a few brief closures of both interstate 35 an 80.
