Event narrative
Several SNOTEL stations including Chepeta, Lakefork Basin, and Currant Creek recorded 2.2 to 3.3 inches of snow water equivalent, resulting in approximately 21 to 31 inches of snow. Additionally, a Coop observer 10 miles ESE of Heber City reported snow water equivalent of around 3.2 inches with a corresponding snowfall amount of 30 inches. Note that some snow in the high elevations began as early as 12/30/22.
Wider weather episode
A strong winter storm brought widespread snowfall and winter impacts to much of the forecast region for the start of 2023. Some of the high elevation locations saw snow begin prior to the new year, while most valley locations saw rain switch to snow right around midnight on the new year. Additionally, isolated flash flooding was reported in southern Utah due to rainfall associated with the system.
