Event narrative
A report of 1.2 inches of snow water equivalent resulting in 10 inches of snow was received from Sunnyside. Automated observing equipment at locations including US-6 at MP 256 SR-123, Carbon County Regional Airport/Buck Davis Field, and US 6 at Helper ranged from 0.7 to 1.9 inches of snow water equivalent, resulting in approximately 6 to 16 inches of snow.
Wider weather episode
A strong winter storm brought widespread snowfall and winter impacts to much of the forecast region for the start of 2023. Some of the high elevation locations saw snow begin prior to the new year, while most valley locations saw rain switch to snow right around midnight on the new year. Additionally, isolated flash flooding was reported in southern Utah due to rainfall associated with the system.
