Mesonet site at Bayou Bienvenue (vertical lift gate) measured a peak wind gust of 45 mph or 39 kts from thunderstorm winds.
Wider weather episode
A cold front associated with an occluding surface low over the upper Midwest pushed through the waters in the early morning hours of January 4th. Along the front, a line of thunderstorms formed and pushed through the waters, bringing winds of over 34 knots. The cold front, and subsequent thunderstorms, exited the outer waters by 12Z.
