Dangerously cold wind chills around 35 below were common across Mitchell County during the morning of January 31st.

An arctic air mass with temperatures of 10 to 25 degrees below zero spread across northeast Iowa at the end of January. These temperatures combined with wind speeds of 10 to 15 mph to produce dangerously cold wind chills nearing 40 below zero during the morning of hours January 31st. The coldest wind chill recorded was 40 below zero at the Charles City (Floyd County) airport.
