Event narrative
Over southeastern Cherry County, extreme (D3) drought conditions persisted through the end of February. Severe (D2) drought conditions persisted over a small portion of east central Cherry County through the end of the month. Across northeastern Cherry County, severe (D2) drought conditions improved to moderate (D1) drought conditions by the end of the month. The cooperative observer at Valentine Lakes NWR reported 0.29 inches of precipitation in February. This was 0.25 inches below the normal of 0.54 inches. At the Valentine airport, 0.41 inches of precipitation fell in February. This was 0.20 inches below the normal of 0.61 inches.
Wider weather episode
Drought conditions improved some in February across the area. The greatest improvements occurred over portions of north central and southwestern Nebraska. In these locations, drought severity improved by one category in February. Elsewhere, drought conditions remained un-changed during the month.
