Winter Weather — Eastern Preston, West Virginia

2023-03-13 to 2023-03-14 · Eastern Preston, West Virginia

Event narrative

An observer near Terra Alta reported a total of 7.1 inches for the event. Four inches was the total 7 miles north of Thomas.

Wider weather episode

Low pressure tracked across the region on the 13th. Antecedent moisture and synoptic lift

created some convective snow showers with brief low visibility during the daytime hours, but a warm ground kept accumulations in check initially. Overnight, continued shortwave enhancement maintained snow over much of the region, and the cooling temperatures and ground surface allowed for additional accumulations. A secondary shortwave trough continued some mainly light snow on the 14th before snow ended during the evening. Upslope enhancement and colder surface temperatures helped to add to snow totals on the ridges as opposed to the lowlands, with system total snow ending up being one of the higher totals of the snow season.
