Event narrative

Buoy 42020 of the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) reported wind gusts above 34 knots associated with a line of thunderstorms starting at 3:40AM CDT and lasting until 4:00PM CDT. The highest gust was 41 knots recorded at 3:50AM CDT.

Wider weather episode

An line of thunderstorms came off Cameron County and northeastern Mexico and raced across the Lower Texas Coastal Waters early in the morning of May 9th. Measured gusts at several of the sites near South Padre Island were between 70 to 80 mph, with one gust measured at 89 mph as the line blew through. It continued until all the way through the offshore Gulf waters, where Buoy 42020 experienced wind gusts of 41 knots just before 4 AM CDT.
