Event narrative

The Texas Coastal Ocean Observing Network (TCOON) site at Rincon del San Jose (RSJT2) reported a measured gust of 39 knots at 4:00AM CDT. The proximity to the coastal waters from Baffin Bay to Port Mansfield out 20 nautical miles coupled with additional wind gusts over 34 knots reported at Buoy 42020 leads credence to the fact this area experienced Marine Thunderstorm Wind gusts as well.

Wider weather episode

An line of thunderstorms came off Cameron County and northeastern Mexico and raced across the Lower Texas Coastal Waters early in the morning of May 9th. Measured gusts at several of the sites near South Padre Island were between 70 to 80 mph, with one gust measured at 89 mph as the line blew through. It continued until all the way through the offshore Gulf waters, where Buoy 42020 experienced wind gusts of 41 knots just before 4 AM CDT.
