Event narrative

Several hours of high winds were observed throughout the Salt Lake Valley, with the DW6120 Sandy (personal weather station) mesonet sensor recording a peak gust of 75 mph between 1:00 am to 1:15 am. Other mesonet sensors including the Salt Lake City International Airport ASOS (KSLC), U of U William Browning Building, and I-215 at Olympus Cove recorded gusts in excess of 58 mph throughout the time period. Additionally, reports were received of a tree uprooted and blocking Johnstone Drive in Sandy, a tree uprooted near Bangerter Highway and 4100 S, and a tree uprooted in Draper. Rocky Mountain Power reported approximately 3500 people without power in Sandy, Cottonwood Heights, and the surrounding areas.

Wider weather episode

Another in a series of winter storms impacted the region early to mid March, resulting in widespread snow accumulation primarily throughout Utah's high terrain. High winds were observed in many locations. An avalanche related fatality is also noted within the time period of this storm.
