What EF1 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF1 is moderate damage: roofs badly stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, windows broken, consistent with estimated gusts of 86–110 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

The tornado touched down at a residence along Lester Houston Road just to the east of Beulaville. The tornado first snapped several large trees, then tore off at least half

the shingles of a garage behind the residence. Shingle damage was found on both the north and south side of the garage, which is a strong indication of a circulation. A large garage bay door was also blown in, and the east side of the garage had the frame removed from the foundation. The strongest winds were estimated around 90 mph.

The wider storm

Several weak brief tornadoes touched down during the evening hours as a cold front and trough of low pressure moved through Eastern NC.

Began near Petersburg Crossing (34.9440, -77.7110).
