Event narrative

The COOP observer located about seven miles south of Shonkin had an event total snow amount of 17 inches. In addition, automate SNOTEL equipment at Onion Park estimated 7 inches new snow in 12 hours ending 8AM MDT 4/13. An additional public report of 11 inches storm total snow was received from 8 miles NNW of Monarch.

Wider weather episode

The region was in the ascent side of an approaching trough, which in combination with a developing surface low, resulted in widespread snow and heavy snow across much of the region.
