A cold front extending from a strong upper level low moved across the area during the evening hours of the 16th. Ahead of the front, building instability on an unseasonably warm day resulted in a few severe thunderstorms over far western New York, including the Buffalo Metro. A severe wind gust of 59 mph was measured at the Buffalo Airport during the evening hours.
