A large area of high pressure strengthened off the California coast on June 29 then build inland into California on June 30. This resulted in the first heat wave of the season across the area between June 30 and July 3. High temperatures across the San Joaquin Valley, lower Sierra foothills, West Side Hills and the Kern River Valley were generally between 102 to 107 degrees on June 30.
