Severe drought conditions developed rapidly across northeast Illinois during the middle of June, which was referred to as a flash drought. Precipitation amounts were well below normal. For the month of June, Rockford Airport measured 1.90 inches, which was 3.33 inches below normal. Aurora Airport measured 1.03 inches, which was 2.95 inches below normal. DuPage Airport measured 1.17 inches which was 2.48 inches below normal. The National Weather Service office in Romeoville measured 1.20 inches, which was 3.48 inches below normal. Waukegan Airport measured 1.72 inches, which was 2.73 inches below normal. Chicago Executive Airport measured 1.69 inches, which was 2.28 inches below normal. Chicago Midway Airport measured 2.08 inches, which was 1.93 inches below normal. Chicago O'Hare Airport measured 2.36 inches which was 1.74 inches below normal. Many creeks, streams and rivers were running well below their normal long term averages by the end of June.
