Thunderstorms formed during the afternoon and evening hours as a surface low passed through southwest and south central North Dakota. Some of these storms became severe with the primary impacts being from large hail, though severe wind gusts of 60 mph were reported on the initial severe storm in McLean County. The largest hail reported was the size of a ping pong ball, which fell in McIntosh County.
