Thunderstorms initially formed over Montana in the vicinity of a surface low that gradually lifted northward near the North Dakota and Montana border. The first storms moved into southwest North Dakota, with one becoming severe producing one-inch diameter hail to the southeast of Golva in Golden Valley County. Late that night, additional thunderstorms developed over northwest North Dakota as a low level jet increased over the area. Another storm became severe, producing wind gusts of 77 mph near Ray in Williams County.
