Event narrative

Observers reported 4 to 5 inches of wet, heavy snow and blowing snow and reduced visibility from north winds gusting near 50 mph. Roads were reported to be snow-covered and slippery with very hazardous travel. Schools throughout the county were either closed or on a two-hour delay due to the hazardous travel from the snow.

Wider weather episode

A combination of Gulf and Atlantic moisture being drawn into a deepening low pressure system over the Upper Great Lakes resulted in record calendar day snowfall totals for May over portions of west and north central Upper Michigan on the 1st and 2nd.
