What the National Weather Service wrote

A very dry start to the monsoon season along with record heat in July resulted in the introduction of severe drought over far southern portions of the zone, including Lindrith and Regina.

The wider storm

Drought conditions overall deteriorated across the state due to an incredibly dry and hot start to the monsoon season. Severe drought expanded across northwest New Mexico in parts of the Northwest Highlands and Far Northwest Highlands. Severe drought also expanded westward across portions of southeastern New Mexico, including the Chaves County Plains and Southwest Chaves County.
