Event narrative

A NWS Storm Survey found evidence consistent with straight line winds of 70 to 90 mph in the Smithwick area of southeast Martin County. Numerous softwood and hardwood trees were damaged, uprooted, or snapped, and several structures were damaged, along with significant crop damage.

Wider weather episode

Thunderstorms moved through Eastern NC during the afternoon hours, several of which became severe and produced damaging straight-line winds of 70 to 90 mph.
