Wider weather episode

Thunderstorms bubbled up across southern Ohio on the hot side of a stalled front during the afternoon hours of the 27th. Temperatures in the warm sector soared into the 90s across most of Kentucky by late in the afternoon while the environment across northeastern Kentucky remained largely capped. However, as the evening progressed, that capping weakened and the storms over the Ohio Valley gave way to renewed storm generation further south along and just north of the I-64 corridor. Much of this new activity developed within a zone of moderately high instability coincident with dry air in the mid-levels. Unsurprisingly, some of the most robust storm cores produced severe downburst winds in this area as they collapsed in the weak shear environment.
