Wider weather episode
An approaching mid-upper level trough from the TN Valley provided sufficient synoptic forcing across South Carolina for widespread severe pulse convection. Ample low level moisture and steepening lapse rates as the trough neared allowed for strong instability to develop, with very weak deep and low level wind shear. A deep layer of mid-level dry air wrapped around the trough aloft and provided sufficient evaporative cooling aloft for both severe hail production and enhanced downbursts.
