Event narrative

Above average temperatures stretched from July 10th through the end of the month and into August. Several prolonged Heat Advisories were in effect, and at times Excessive Heat Warnings were needed, as temperatures soared over 100 degrees and/or heat index values recorded over 105 degrees.

Wider weather episode

The start of what would be one of the hottest summer months on record began in July. North and Central Texas experienced above average temperatures from July 10 through the end of the month. Several prolonged Heat Advisories were in effect, and at times Excessive Heat Warnings were needed. The average temperature for the month of July ranked in the Top 10 warmest for climate sites in both North and Central Texas. However, it was the month of August that really tipped the average temperature for the summer season into the Top 5. Unfortunately several fatalities were reported in the DFW Metroplex related to heat.
