Event narrative

Heavy rains of 1-2 inches in 24 hours caused widespread minor flooding across the Talkeetna and Little Susitna Basins. Minor flooding was recorded at several river gauges and long periods of elevated river levels, exacerbated river bank erosion in the areas around Talkeetna.

Wider weather episode

Saturated conditions from preceding storms, combined with widespread heavy rainfall of 1-2 inches over a 24 hour period, across the Susitna and Matanuska River Valleys Sept 1, 2023. These conditions and widespread, consistent rainfall pushed streams to bankfull with large swaths of the valleys experiencing minor flooding.
