Wider weather episode
Thunderstorms developed during the afternoon and evening hours of the 16th across far northeastern Minnesota ahead of a cold front. Daytime heating led to strong instability over the region and a strong low level jet provided ample wind shear for storms to work with. With the cold front, the storms were generally linear in mode resulting in strong wind guts as they moved over portions of western Lake Superior.
