Event narrative

A Texas Tech University West Texas mesonet site near Roaring Springs measured severe wind gusts from 1320 CST through 1321 CST. A peak wind gust of 70 mph was measured at 1320 CST.

Wider weather episode

Widespread severe storms affected portions of the South Plains and Rolling Plains on the afternoon of the fourth supported by unseasonably warm temperatures and strong instability. The instability fueled numerous thunderstorms, some which were severe and produced torrential rainfall near and ahead of a cold front. The most intense storms generated very large hail, as big as three inches in diameter near Reese Center (Lubbock County). A supercell thunderstorm tracked from Cochran County through Crosby County dumping a swath of very large hail across northern Lubbock County.
