Event narrative

Light freezing rain accumulation was reported by the school in Sleetmute at 7:50 AM AKST 10/16. Apparent freezing rain also showed up on nearby webcams and as unknown precipitation in METARs for several hours in Aniak, Kalskag and Sleetmute. Slippery ground conditions were reported as kids walked to school in Sleetmute on the morning of 10/16.

Wider weather episode

A band of steady, mixed precipitation overspread much of Southwest Alaska as a warm nose of temperatures above freezing spread in from the south while a shallow layer of temperatures below freezing held in place at the surface across much of the Lower Kuskokwim Valley. This temperature profile allowed periods of rain, freezing rain and snow to last for several hours between the late evening of 10/15 into the morning of 10/16, including over Aniak and Sleetmute. Freezing rain and slick conditions were reported at Sleetmute on the morning of 10/16, but no accumulation reports or estimates were received.
