Event narrative

Warm environmental temperatures in the mid 90s combined with high dewpoint values in the mid and upper 70s caused high heat indices exceeding 105F for over three hours. The AWOS station located in Hager City, WI (in adjacent Pierce County) first recorded its highest apparent temperature of 113F at 4:15 PM (CST). It remained over 105F through 8:15 PM (CST).

Wider weather episode

Excessive Heat occurred for portions of western Wisconsin through the afternoon of August 22nd, 2023. A warm front stalled over the region which allowed for a continued supply of warm moist air into the region. Highs ranged in the 90s to low 100s, dew points in the 70s, with heat indices ranging between 105-120 degrees.

The highest apparent temperatures recorded were:

New Richmond, WI (St. Croix) at 119F

Osceola, WI (Polk) at 114F

Hager City, WI (Pierce) at 113F.
