A shortwave trough punched over the northern Great Lakes on 8/3, providing favorable forcing aloft to support scattered thunderstorm development amidst ample instability in place during the afternoon. These storms produced severe hail over northern Lake Huron and portions of northwest lower Michigan, as well as measured severe wind gusts near the Traverse City area.
